The D.K.M. Tirpitz was the sister ship to the D.K.M. Bismarck these were the two most powerful battleships ever built in Europe and the most heavily armoured. While Tirpitz never destroyed another ship in a traditional gun fight she was responsible for the complete destruction of PQ18 a convoy which had been misinformed that she was sailing to attack them; the reality was she never sailed but the convoy was scattered and destroyed by aircraft.
Tirpitz struck fear into allied sailors and her existence alone could do immense harm to the allied war effort. In 1944 she was eventually bombed and sunk by tall boy bombs in Tromso fjord. The model represents the Tirpitz in her 1942 dazzle paint scheme I have displayed her in the traditional builders model style; full hull on a pedestal base.
The number of parts on this extremely complex model is staggering the anti aircraft guns alone cover almost every available space on the superstructure and required a huge amount of work to accurately represent them. This model received a bronze medal at the world show in 2012.
View ProjectThe Yukikaze was an imperial Japanese navy destroyer of World War 2 the Japanese destroyers were arguably the most powerful of any nation at the time of their construction. An interesting comparison can be made between this model and the H.M.S. Daring, the destroyer has transitioned from a small easy to build weapon, to one of the world’s most powerful surface ships.
A daring class destroyer cost the U.K. just over 1 Billion each to produce. The model represents Yukikaze in her Leyte Gulf fit and is built full hull however I have broke with tradition and showed her in a poor material state which is how she would have looked in 1945 fighting for a doomed Empire with little maintenance being carried out.
View ProjectThe Lusitania was the world’s largest and fastest ocean liner when built she served the Cunard line with distinction. In the First World War she continued on her transatlantic service however in May 1915 she was torpedoed and sunk with huge loss of life within sight of Ireland.
The kit this model is built from is long out of production and with the moulds reputed to be destroyed it will probably never be available again. I have added a dedicated etching set to this very old model and she now accurately represents the Atlantic greyhound in her prime. (See the painting section for my representation of the sinking, profiled from this model)
View ProjectThe R.M.S. Titanic needs no introduction to people within the maritime world her destruction caused by an iceberg still encapsulates and strikes fear into all who hear the story.
This model remains one of the most ambitious projects I have undertaken; when I started I was not even sure if a good final finish could be achieved. After 2 years of construction this was the final result.
If I explain everything involved in creating this scene it would take up this whole website so I will let the pictures do the talking.
View ProjectThe Andrea Gail was brought to an international audience in the Film “The perfect storm” The fishing boat was caught in one of the worst storms ever recorded, unfortunately the boat and the fishermen were never seen again.
This model is by far the largest I have ever produced I feel she is also the most encapsulating, representing the unforgiving power of nature. Every sailor who goes to sea realises they are guests and while ships get bigger all the time, the sea can at a stroke wipe out anything put upon it.
The model is the largest scale I have worked in and is made from a plank on frame kit. All the fine details are scratch-built and as this model is a representation of the boat used in the film and not the real Andrea Gail, so for this model I was able to use a bit of artistic licence.
