The H.M.S. Minerva was a Leander class frigate, this class of ship has widely been seen by naval analysts as the most successful ship designe built for the Royal navy since the end of the second world war, this claim is backed up by the numbers which where built and the very long service lives of many. Minerva was typical, she commissioned in 1966 and was not decommissioned until 1992.
This painting was a commission and the client wanted me to create a painting from a very famous photo, this I have done however there are many differences from the original photo, the ship for example is in a completely different fit to that of the photo, however I still thought it prudent to ensure all permissions where received in order to paint this image.
In the photos below I have included the finished painting and one which shows how I originally painted the helicopter differently from the final outcome, this was a direct result of the client wanting it done the way the painting finally completed.
